Trails is a once in a lifetime hound. He measures right at 15" and is a big frame houndy male. He has been in 15 licensed AKC & CKC trials and placed in 12 of them. He is CKC & AKC registered and DNA profiled.
Check Work - For a big male, he is as close as they come. He comes back to the point of loss, and works without losing track of the point of loss. He works the check independent of any other hounds actions or faulty mouth. He comes out of the check on fire, and will leave the rest of the pack in dust if they are not close to him.
Speed - Trails has the speed to lead any pack of hounds. He has proven this in the Mid West Gun Dog Association, Northern Michigan Hare Association and the CKC LP. He does not have the speed to overtake an extremely fast hound that has the line, but that extremely fast hound will not take the lead from Trails until he lost the line.
Line Control - Trails can make the hard turns on the pack, and has shown this in his ability to maintain the lead on a pack of hounds. Please understand Trails runs the rabbit to catch it so he loses the line a bit more than a hound that runs in formats such as UBGF. If a dog is leading him around, and that dog skirts, Trails has at times skirted with that lead dog. If the lead dog is doing it right, Trails does not skirt to get around him or other dogs that may have passed Trails or if Trails is dominating the pack, he does not skirt to get there. He has shown me time and time again, how he will gear down for the conditions and maintain the line control necessary to keep the race going.
Nose - There has not been a day on the ground he could not run the rabbit. It may not always be steady, but he can move the line in any condition. Whether it be windy and negative temperatures on the crusty snow or a 95 F degree July day. He does not have the best nose I have seen, but I would give him a seven or maybe eight on a scale of 1 to 10.
Hunt - Trails is always busy. He goes in the briars. He does not stand and watch other dogs. I have observed Trails quitting, but the two times I observed this behavior, he had teeth holes in his ear (dog fighting). If Trails does not have a dog getting aggressive with him, he will hunt all day long.
Disposition - I can kennel anything of any age with Trails. I can put a 10-week-old pup in with him that is biting at him, eating out of his food dish and he will never growl, bite or even have one hair stand up on his back. Does not mess in his dog box, dog dish or water bucket. Does not bark at feed time, when a critter is near the kennel or if a bitch is in heat the next kennel over.
Off Game - Trails will be at your feet on a deer run. He got a dose of Tri-Tronics one time and that was all it took. I have never had him run anything but a rabbit.
Handle - I can call him to me when the dogs are not running a rabbit. I can walk him out of the woods with out a lead as I did at the AKC Nationals. He is extremely smart.
I will be happy to answer any question you have. Please feel free to contact me.
I would like to give a public thank you to Mike Corrigan for handling Trails in NMHA and Terry McBride for handling Trails at a CKC trail and Canadian Nationals. And last but not least, Rob Fuller for selling me this hound.
